Talk to Your Doctor Before Getting a Back Massage Chair

Published by Author under Massage

Although it is generally safe for anyone to use a back massage chair or interactive health massage chair, there are certain circumstances in which you are going to have to speak to your doctor and get their opinion before going ahead and using it. This is just to ensure that you are going to be okay and that you will not be putting yourself at any risk. After all, it is better to know about the risks before you start.

When to Talk to the Doc

If you are pregnant or nursing, you should always talk to your doctor before using a back massage chair and even before getting a massage from a real live masseuse. Even if you are given the okay to go ahead and get the massage, you need to make sure that you are going to a qualified and experienced masseuse so they will perform the massage properly.

Another reason you should speak to your doctor before using a back massage chair is if you have an infectious disease. This is for a couple of reasons. For one, if you do have an infectious disease, the massaging of the chair may actually end up making your condition worse. You definitely do not want to use a back massage chair and then let someone else use it if you have an infectious disease, because then this person will be at great risk of getting the disease as well.

Another reason that you would want to speak to your doctor before using a back massage chair is if you have a serious bodily injury. Whether you have put your back out in the past or have shoulder problems, for instance, it is going to be wise for you to speak to your doctor before using one of these chairs just so they can assess your condition and ensure that you are going to be okay getting a massage from one of these chairs, especially if the chair is powerful.

Generally people are okay to use back massage chairs, but if you do have a special condition or reasons such as those mentioned above, you are definitely going to want to talk about the idea with your doctor before you try it out and definitely before you go out and buy one. Massage chairs are typically quite expensive, ranging from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars for the higher end models, such as those that are used in salons.

How to Perfect the Deep Tissue Massage Technique

Published by Author under Massage

Of all the different massage types there are, one of the most commonly performed is the deep tissue massage. The deep tissue massage technique is one that is unique and unlike any other technique in the massage field. To properly learn about the deep tissue massage technique and how to perform it, you first need to understand more about the deep tissue massage in general, its purpose and what it is all about.

What it is

The deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on the realigning of deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. It is certainly one of the most intense types of massage, and the deep tissue massage technique is usually only used in more serious cases, when a person is experiencing problems because of sore muscles and joints. If you are in this category, you should definitely consider getting a massage.

How it Works

The way in which the deep tissue massage technique works is pretty easy to understand. It works by physically breaking down adhesions in the body which can end up blocking circulation and causing pain and limited movement, and as a result relieving pain and restoring normal movement to the client’s body. Remember that deep tissue massages often cause discomfort or pain, and so the client will need to be prepared for this and of course you need to make sure that you are doing it correctly so you do not end up leaving them in more pain.

You really need to practice the deep tissue massage technique over and over until you get it right. It is not considered as being one of the most difficult types of massage to learn, however, because it is so intense and there is such a risk of injury to the client, it is therefore one that needs to be practiced repetitively until the massage therapist is sure that they are doing it correctly.

There is also the deep tissue sports massage which is used on athletes who play professional sports. If you have ever watched a professional sports game surely you have noticed a massage therapist either going onto the field to help a player or working with them on the bench.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a certified massage therapist should really attend a legal course or class on massage therapy. There will be a qualified and experienced professional there who can make sure that training is proper and that the right techniques are being used.

Body Massage Oil: Why and How to Use it During a Massage

Published by Author under Massage

One of the most important tools to have for a great body massage is body massage oil. There are quite a few different types of body massage oil to choose from, but one of the most commonly chosen is the aromatherapy body massage oil. This oil is great because it gives off a scent that invigorates in different ways.

The lavender aromatherapy massage oil for instance helps to calm and relax, while a cinnamon scented oil would lighten them up and make them more awake. You therefore need to be very careful when you are choosing your oil, depending on the type of massage that the person is looking for.

Tips

There are a few other tips that are going to come very helpful when you are going to use body massage oil in a massage. For one, after you put the body massage oil into your hands, before you put it on the person’s back you should rub your hands together so that you can warm the oil up. This way it will not be a shock when you smooth it onto their body.

If the person has particularly dry skin you may want to use a massage oil that contains a moisturizer, so it will help to revitalize and replenish their skin. Just make sure that if you do use this type of massage oil you do not use too much because then your hands will just be slopping around and you will not be able to give a proper massage.

Where to Buy

If you need to get yourself some body massage oil, there is an almost endless list of options available to you. There are a few companies in particular however that specializes in massage oil and who are therefore going to offer the largest, most varied selections of oil and other massage products for you to choose from.

One example is Kiehl’s, and they offer products that are made utilizing the finest ingredients known to them in their unique formulations in order to assure the high quality skin, hair and body care that their customers have come to expect from them as a company. They have a very unique and extensive background that represents a true blend of cosmetic, pharmaceutical and medicinal knowledge developed and passed on through the generations. Another option worth checking out is Lilou Organics where you will also find a vast selection of oils and massage tools to choose from.

Finding the Right College of Massage Therapy

Published by Author under Massage

When you are looking for the massage therapy benefits that come with a career as a massage therapist your first important step is choosing how you will get your massage therapy education.  It used to be that massage therapy schools and classes were the kinds of things only advertised on the back of matchbook covers but a lot has changed in the last couple of decades and now there are many schools that go under the name of college of massage therapy.

The first thing you need to realize in your search for the right college of massage therapy is that the days of getting a qualified education from a fly by night massage therapy class are over.  Massage therapy as a profession has graduated to the level of requiring a college of massage therapy as your educational background and the quickie classes and courses just do not cut it anymore.

Many therapists start out with the quickie courses and then find themselves taking more classes after the fact so that they can learn their profession better.  You can save yourself a great deal of hassle, and get it right the first time, if you start out with a college of massage therapy as your educational background.

Choosing a good college of massage therapy is just like choosing any other school.  The first thing you need to do is check to make sure the college of massage therapy you are considering is accredited and a qualified school.  This is very easy to do and once you have checked out the school’s qualification you then need to move on to the school’s reputation.  It is very important to insist that your college of massage therapy have a fully certified background so that they can supply you with the best education possible.  An education at a college of massage therapy with a shady background can only lead to trouble.

Then it is Time to Ask Around

A good college of massage therapy will have a good reputation that should be easy to confirm.  You can do something as simple as an internet search to see if the school you are considering brings up any bad responses.  Take people’s negative experiences very seriously.  This is your future you are dealing with and the potential health of your future clients so be sure you insist on a school with a stellar reputation.

There are many massage therapy organizations out there that would be more than happy to recommend a good college of massage therapy to you.  Contact them and ask what they recommend but always be sure to do your own research as well.

Features of a Folding Massage Table

Published by Author under Massage

A folding massage table is something that is used for massages that can be kept at any given time when the massage is over. The folding massage table has its merits and demerits as well. There are also many different features that may be included in a folding massage table.

Merits of a Folding Massage Table

There are mostly merits in store for the folding massage table. One of these merits is the convenience of storage and moving around. Since the massage table can be occupy a relatively smaller space than an ordinary massage table. You can expect it to be able to be stored in any space that it may fit into. This is very convenient especially if the owner would like to have a place for everything and everything in its place.

Another thing that is a plus for the folding massage table is the convenience of being able to lug it around the house and anywhere else you might like to bring it to. This is easily a plus especially for women who prefer to have a lightweight and folding massage table. One can even bring the massage table to work if you need to loan if to the company for such incentives such as a spa treatment or a massage.

One more thing that makes a folding massage table very good to have at home is the fact that it can double as a futon if you wish. In case, too many guests wish to stay the night and you run out of futons or mattresses, the folding massage table can double as a bed. It may be a bit on the narrow side but this can be easily remedied by placing it strategically beside the wall to prevent nay falls. One can also adjust the height of most massage tables to a lower height to discourage falls when it is used as an ordinary bed.

Demerits of a Folding Massage Table

One of the things that can put you off a massage table that can be folded is the fact that there are moving parts in the table. These moving parts can mean that the table itself can eventually become unstable due to regular wear and tear attributed to folding. One sign of wear and tear of a folding massage table is the sudden collapse of one or some of the legs due to the pressure of the massage and the weight of the person. Another demerit is also the fact that it can be of great difficulty to install a heater to make the table into a heated massage table. The type of massage table that features folding can easily attract buyers due to the convenience it implies.

What You Need To Know About The School Of Medical Massage

Published by Author under Massage

A 2005 study showed that 12% of all Americans had a professional massage and that 45% loved it.  They would rather go to a professional massage therapist than go to the doctor (although this practice is not encouraged).  And this is shown in the rise of people wanting to become massage therapists (a term used more than masseuse).  This has lead to the rise of all kinds of massage schools, from Shiatsu massage schools to the School of Medical Massage.

The Specifics

The School of Medical Massage has a beautiful website, but don’t let that fool you. It does exist as an actual bricks and mortar school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Although Pennsylvania currently does not have any licensing requirements for massage therapists, the School of Medical Massage is a nationally accredited school.  It is one of the schools recommended by the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals, national guild for massage therapists.

They don’t just let anybody into the School of Medical Massage.  There are some requirements.  You have to be at least eighteen years old and you have to have a high school diploma or GED.  You also have to have a lot of money.  It’s just as expensive going to the School of Medical Massage as it is to go to any other college or university.  You need to check with the School itself about financial aid possibilities.

Other things you need in order to be allowed to attend are a physical from your doctor saying you are healthy enough to touch other people and three character references, two of which have to be from people not related to you.  You also have to pass an admissions test and pay a $75 non-refundable admissions fee.

What Do You Learn?

At the School of Medical Massage, your courses tally up to over 700 hours of intense training.  You learn about human anatomy, physiology, medical terms, insurance billing, therapist self-care, CPR, first aid, lymph node drainage (which massage can help) and massage techniques.

At the end of the program at The School of Medical Massage, you should be able to help diagnose a patient, help massage them and then fill out the insurance forms.  Perhaps more importantly, you also learn enough to take on the national certification exams and learn what being a professional at anything is all about.  There is a lot more learned than just massage at the School of Medical Massage.

The Difference Between a Swedish Deep Tissue Massage and Regular Massage

Published by Author under Massage

There are actually many important differences between a Swedish deep tissue massage. And, a regular massage, and which you should be aware of, whether you are training to become a professional masseuse or just want to give someone a proper massage.

What it is

Swedish deep tissue massage is one of the most popular types of massage therapies, and one that is most intense as well. The first step in Swedish deep tissue massage is to determine the goal of the massage. Maybe you are going to be working on an athlete who is going to need an all over massage, or perhaps you are just working on a specific area such as the back or shoulders.

Remember that the Swedish massage is one that focuses on providing general relaxation and so you want to make sure that the person you are massaging is soothed and comfortable. Also make sure that you compare the different strokes used during this massage because they are unique from other types of massage, and you want to make sure that you are doing it correctly.

You need to keep an eye on the speed and pressure that you are using during the Swedish deep tissue massage. It is important that you put strength into it but not so much that you causing them any discomfort or pain.

You need to use your fingertips, thumbs, knuckles, forearms and elbows, as it is a very hands on massage when compared to others where you would only use your hands and fingertips. Identify which muscles and tissues are going to be the focus of the Swedish deep tissue massage before starting so you know which areas you need to work on most and because it is the deeper muscles and connective tissues which are the focus here.

The deep tissue massage technique used here is much different from any other, and it is important that you get this technique right before you go ahead and perform the massage on anyone. The last thing you want to do is cause injury to someone and have them leave feeling worse than they did when they came to you, and although most people are not aware, you actually can really hurt someone by giving them a massage if you do it incorrectly.

The best idea, especially if you have no experience in the massage field, is to take a course or class. This way you will have a trained masseuse there working with you who will be able to show you the ropes, teach you tricks and techniques, and ensure that you are doing it correctly before you give anyone a massage.

What Does it Take to Become a Certified Massage Therapist?

Published by Author under Massage

What does it take to become a certified massage therapist?  If you stop to think about it that is probably not a question many people that are not a certified massage therapist can answer.  When it comes to finding out the particulars, everybody knows the years of school needed to just start the process of becoming a doctor, but what about becoming a certified massage therapist?

Believe it or not, while the schooling may not be nearly as intense as medical training, the process is still very much the same as becoming a doctor and the coursework can still be quite demanding.  The journey to becoming a certified massage therapist starts at the same type of place that becoming a doctor begins at.  Doctors have medical school.  The certified massage therapist starts their journey at a college of massage therapy and you can find such colleges all throughout the United States and Canada.

As an effective method of stress relief massage therapy has always been considered a good option but it is actually fairly recently that the notion of pain therapy through massage therapy has been pioneered.  While many a certified massage therapist has been doing pain therapy for years it was not until recently that the practitioners of standard medicine have started to lend some credence to the notion of controlling pain through massage therapy.

In response to that the process of becoming a certified massage therapist has taken on the look of a doctor’s schooling.  First there is years of study at college and then low level internships while the certified massage therapist learns their profession.  As massage therapy gets more recognition from mainstream medicine the demands of massage therapy training become more advanced.

So How Much Schooling Are we Talking?

Today the process of becoming a certified massage therapist can require as little as 38 weeks of training or as much as 2 or 3 years.  It all depends on how much you really want to know about your new profession.  It can be difficult to learn some of the more important aspects on the job so the more schooling the better.

A certified massage therapist can expect to learn how the muscles interact within the human body and how the joints can be manipulated and treated for pain and other conditions.  If you are to master the art of massage therapy then it is critical that you understand the entire workings of the human body.
